Fatima is currently completing her PhD in urban planning at the University of Waterloo under the supervision of Prof. Dawn Parker. Given her background in architecture and her interest in nature-inspired design, she followed her research in the field of complexity exploring the origin of fractal patterns in cities.
Supported by WICI, she achieved a Java Programming Certificate from the University of Leeds in U.K. and since then she’s been a member of WICI’s agent-based modelling working group. In her Master’s in UW, she developed an agent-based model of a virtual city in which fractal patterns emerge in the simulation landscape through very simple agent interaction rules. Her current research focuses on investigating the evolution of urban social structures and the patterns of urban form.
